Can somebody explain the gear system to me?

I'm brand new to this game but I feel like I'm picking it up pretty nicely. I've played MK11 since launch so skills-wise I think I'm already above average. I just got matched up with someone who had all level 30 gear, whereas I have one piece of level 2 gear and the rest one. I was definitely landing more hits and combos but I ended up losing having barely made it halfway through his first health bar. So my question is do I not even bother playing casuals until I level up my gear? What's the best way to level up and get new gear? And just a general overall explanation of the gear system would be nice. Thanks

Is Bane this broken?

Why is it everytime I face the very hard AI Bane or a select few godly online ones, they can just effortlessly armor through all my abilities, bait out their reverse punish, while mixing up all those suplexs and kick flip things? Hes one of the only characters who gives me an insanely hard time all the time. I main batman, black adam, and aquaman. Are they just ill suited against him?
